She is a native of California who lived at Menlo Park which is a suburb to South of San Francisco. Her father Walter Smith was a computer market researcher, and his mother Lora was therapy. Courtney's parents divorced at the age of seven. Courtney was able to spend time with both parents at various levels. Jennifer, her older sister is a business executive. She attended Menlo-Atherton High School (Atherton in California) and Tamalpais High School (Mill Valley in California) and graduated in the year 1985.
